Brush Lettering Basics PART 1 (Beginners)

This is a practical workshop aimed at teenagers and adults wanting to learn the BASICS of brush lettering.. you will learn enough to be able to use your brush markers and do an easy cursive style with outlining, shadowing and blending...For complete beginners, and we'll cover the following:

  • How to use your brush koki's

  • Basic cursive style - lower case

  • Outlining, shadowing and blending techniques

There will also be pens on sale during the workshop, incl. Tombow, Koi, Kuretake, etc, as well as various types of paper most suited to brush lettering.

Cost:  R450pp for a 3 hour workshop (incl. materials, snacks and refreshments)

Brush Lettering PART 2 (Beginners)

For anyone at intermediate level who’s done the beginners workshop already, you can come and just carry on from where you left off, and we'll cover the following:

  • Revision of basic brush lettering (if you feel you need it)

  • Upper case

  • Fun creative 'looks' for your lettering'

  • Embellishments and flourishing

  • Bouncy lettering

There will also be pens on sale during the workshop, incl. Tombow, Koi, Kuretake, etc, as well as various types of paper most suited to brush lettering.

Bouncy Lettering (intermediate level only)

Intermediate Level Workshop - 3 hours (adults & teenagers)

Cost:  R400 pp

This is a practical workshop aimed at teenagers and adults wanting to learn more ADVANCED bouncy brush lettering (you should preferably have done the beginners brush lettering workshop, or the longer brush lettering course).. 

We'll cover the following, and more:

  • How to do bouncy lettering

  • Which letters to ‘bounce’

  • Creative layout for bouncy lettering

  • How to mix bouncy and plain writing

There will be pens on sale afterwards, incl. Tombow, Koi, Kuretake, etc, as well as various types of paper most suited to brush lettering.

Creative Layout (intermediate level)

Intermediate Level Workshop - Suitable for traditional calligraphy and brush lettering.

Cost:  R400 pp 

Duration: 3 hours

Dates for the Creative Layout Workshop - To Be Confirmed

Are you struggling with layout planning and not confident enough to write something out ‘for real’…? During this practical beginners workshop you will learn all about layout and we’ll cover the following topics:

  • How to do a rough draft and decide on things like portrait or landscape, A4 or A5

  • How to plan the spacing and word placement

  • How to emphasize certain words using flourishing, outlining, shadowing, metallics, etc.

  • How to choose the correct colours and style of writing

  • How to mix lower case cursive with block capitals

We’ll help you with all of this and you’ll leave with at least two finished pieces (one A4 and one A5)

Requirements: You should ideally have done one of the beginners brush lettering, hand lettering or calligraphy courses, or be able to do basic brush lettering or calligraphy. Your writing does not need to be perfect!
